Enter how far you ran and your finish time. The calculator shows your pace per mile, your pace per kilometre, and your speed in both mph and km/h.

The pace formula
Pace is simply your total time divided by the distance you covered. Convert the finish time to seconds first, then divide:
total seconds = hr × 3600 + min × 60 + sec
pace per mile = total seconds ÷ distance in miles
speed (mph) = distance in miles ÷ hours
To get pace and speed in metric, convert distance with 1 mile = 1.60934 km (multiply miles by that, or divide km by it). Pace is then shown back as minutes and seconds (mm:ss).
Worked example
A full marathon of 26.2 miles finished in 4:00:00:
Total time: 4 × 3600 = 14,400 seconds.
Pace per mile: 14,400 ÷ 26.2 = 549.6 s ≈ 9:10 per mile.
Pace per km: 26.2 mi = 42.16 km, so 14,400 ÷ 42.16 = 341.5 s ≈ 5:42 per km.
Speed: 26.2 ÷ 4 = 6.55 mph (10.54 km/h).

Tip: on race day, run the first few miles a touch slower than your goal pace. Going out too fast is the most common reason runners fade in the second half.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my running pace?
Divide your total time in seconds by the distance. For pace per mile use the distance in miles; for pace per kilometre use the distance in kilometres. Then convert the result back to minutes and seconds.
What is a good marathon pace?
A 4-hour marathon is about 9:10 per mile (5:41 per km). Sub-4 hours is a common goal for recreational runners; elite men finish near 4:40 per mile. Choose a pace you can sustain for the full 26.2 miles.
How do I convert pace per mile to pace per kilometre?
One mile is about 1.60934 km, so multiply your per-mile pace by 0.621371 to get per-km pace. A 9:10 per mile pace is roughly 5:42 per kilometre.
How is pace different from speed?
Pace is time per unit of distance (minutes per mile), so a lower number is faster. Speed is distance per unit of time (miles per hour), so a higher number is faster. They are reciprocals of each other.
