The tip and split formula
tip = bill × (tip% ÷ 100)
grand total = bill + tip
per person = grand total ÷ number of people
Tip is calculated on the pre-tax bill by convention in the US, although many people simply tip on the total — both are common. Splitting evenly just divides the grand total by the head count.
Worked example
A $120 bill, 18% tip, split 4 ways:
Tip: 120 × 0.18 = $21.60.
Grand total: 120 + 21.60 = $141.60.
Per person: 141.60 ÷ 4 = $35.40 each.

Frequently asked questions
How do you split a bill with tip?
Add the tip to the bill for the grand total, then divide by the number of people. A $120 bill with an 18% tip split four ways is $141.60 ÷ 4 = $35.40 each.
Should you tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Etiquette says tip on the pre-tax subtotal, but many people tip on the total for simplicity. The difference is small, and either is considered fine.
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the US, 15–20% is customary for sit-down table service, with 20% or more for excellent service. This calculator offers 15%, 18% and 20% presets plus a custom rate.
What does rounding up per person do?
It rounds each person's share up to the next whole dollar, which makes the amounts easy to hand over and quietly bumps the total tip up a little.
