The tip formula

A tip is a percentage of the bill, then the total is the bill plus that tip, and the per-person share divides the total by the number of people:

tip = bill × tip% ÷ 100 total = bill + tip per person = total ÷ people

Worked example

A $62.50 bill with an 18% tip, split between 2 people:

Tip: 62.50 × 0.18 = $11.25.
Total: 62.50 + 11.25 = $73.75.
Per person: 73.75 ÷ 2 = $36.88.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

In the US, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is customary for sit-down table service, with 20% or more for excellent service. Buffets and counter service are usually tipped less or not at all.

Do I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

The convention is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, since sales tax isn't part of the service. Tipping on the full taxed total is fine too, just slightly more generous.

How do I split a bill with a tip evenly?

Add the tip to the bill first, then divide the grand total by the number of people. This calculator does that automatically and shows the per-person figure.

What is an automatic gratuity?

Some restaurants add a fixed service charge (commonly 18%) for large parties. If you see one on the bill, you don't need to add another tip on top unless you want to.

Tip percentages reflect customary US service-industry norms; gratuity is discretionary except where a venue states an automatic service charge. All figures are computed in your browser. For tax treatment of tips, see the IRS guidance on tip income.
