Gas Mileage Calculator

Two tools in one. Work out your fuel economy in MPG and L/100km from a tank, or estimate what a trip will cost in fuel from its distance, your mileage and the price of gas.

Gas mileage and fuel-cost formulas

MPG: miles per gallon = miles driven ÷ gallons used L/100km: litres per 100 km = 235.215 ÷ MPG trip cost: cost = (distance ÷ MPG) × price per gallon

MPG and L/100 km describe the same thing inversely: a higher MPG is better, but a lower L/100 km is better. The conversion constant 235.215 comes from the litres-per-gallon and km-per-mile factors.

Worked example

You drove 320 miles on 12 gallons:

MPG: 320 ÷ 12 ≈ 26.7 mpg.
L/100km: 235.215 ÷ 26.7 ≈ 8.8 L/100km.
A 500-mile trip at $3.50/gal: (500 ÷ 26.7) × $3.50 ≈ $65.55.

Improving your mileage

Fuel economy drops sharply above about 50 mph, and aggressive acceleration and braking can cut it by 15–30% on the highway. Keeping tyres properly inflated, removing roof racks and excess weight, and steady cruising all help. The official figures behind US window stickers come from the EPA.

Tip: measure real-world MPG over several fill-ups rather than one. Fill the tank, reset the trip meter, and at the next fill divide the miles by the gallons it took to refill.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate MPG?

Divide the miles driven by the gallons of fuel used. 320 miles on 12 gallons is 320 ÷ 12 ≈ 26.7 mpg.

How do I convert MPG to L/100km?

Divide 235.215 by the MPG figure. 30 mpg is about 7.84 L/100km. Note the scales run opposite ways — higher MPG but lower L/100km is more efficient.

How do I estimate the fuel cost of a trip?

Divide the trip distance by your MPG to get gallons needed, then multiply by the price per gallon. A 500-mile trip at 27 mpg and $3.50/gal costs about $65.

How can I get the most accurate MPG?

Measure over several tanks. Fill up completely, reset your trip odometer, drive normally, and at the next full fill-up divide the miles travelled by the gallons it took to top off.

MPG, the L/100 km conversion (235.215 ÷ MPG) and trip-cost math are standard unit calculations. Official US fuel-economy ratings and fuel-saving guidance come from the U.S. EPA & Department of Energy (fueleconomy.gov). Math runs in your browser.
