The square footage formula

For a rectangular space, area is simply length times width, both in feet:

square feet = length(ft) × width(ft) total cost = square feet × price per sq ft

Worked example

A room 12 ft by 10 ft, flooring at $3.50 per square foot:

Area: 12 × 10 = 120 sq ft.
Material cost: 120 × $3.50 = $420.

Other units and ordering tips

One square yard is 9 square feet, and one square foot is about 0.0929 square metres. Flooring is often sold by the square yard or the box, so the calculator shows square yards too. For non-rectangular rooms, split the space into rectangles, find each area, and add them up.

Tip: always buy 5–10% extra for cuts, waste and future repairs — pattern matching, diagonal layouts and tricky corners increase waste, so round up when ordering.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate square footage?

Multiply length by width, both in feet. A 12 ft by 10 ft room is 120 square feet. For odd shapes, divide the space into rectangles, calculate each, and add them together.

How many square feet are in a square yard?

Nine. A square yard is 3 ft × 3 ft = 9 square feet. To convert square feet to square yards, divide by 9; flooring is often priced per square yard.

How do I estimate flooring cost?

Multiply the area in square feet by the price per square foot, then add 5–10% extra for waste and cuts. A 120 sq ft room at $3.50/sq ft is about $420 in material before the waste allowance.

How do I find the area of an irregular room?

Break it into rectangles (and triangles if needed), calculate each area separately, and sum them. For a triangle, area is ½ × base × height.

Area of a rectangle is a basic geometric identity (length × width). Unit conversions (9 sq ft per sq yard, 0.0929 m² per sq ft) are exact. Always add a waste margin when ordering materials. Math runs in your browser.
