The US Navy body-fat formula

The US Navy method estimates body fat from a few tape measurements and height, all in inches, using a logarithmic regression. For men:

BF% = 86.010 × log₁₀(waist neck) 70.041 × log₁₀(height) + 36.76

For women, hip circumference is added in:

BF% = 163.205 × log₁₀(waist + hip neck) 97.684 × log₁₀(height) 78.387

Worked example

A man 70 in tall with a 16 in neck and 34 in waist:

Waist − neck: 34 − 16 = 18.
86.010 × log₁₀(18): 86.010 × 1.2553 ≈ 107.97.
70.041 × log₁₀(70): 70.041 × 1.8451 ≈ 129.24.
Body fat: 107.97 − 129.24 + 36.76 ≈ 15.5%.

Tip: measure at the navel for waist, below the larynx for neck, and at the widest point for hips. Keep the tape snug but not compressing the skin, and measure on bare skin for consistency.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the US Navy body fat method?

It is typically within about 3–4 percentage points of a hydrostatic (underwater) weighing for most people — good enough to track changes over time, though less precise than a DEXA scan. Consistent tape technique matters most.

What measurements do I need?

Height and neck and waist circumference for everyone, plus hip circumference for women. All measurements are in inches. Measure on bare skin with a snug, level tape.

Why do women need a hip measurement?

The female formula adds hip circumference because fat distribution differs by sex, and including the hip improves the estimate's accuracy for women.

What is a healthy body fat percentage?

Fitness ranges are roughly 14–17% for men and 21–24% for women, with athletes lower. Essential fat (the minimum the body needs) is about 2–5% for men and 10–13% for women.

The circumference equations are the method used in U.S. Navy body-composition standards; the category ranges follow the American Council on Exercise (ACE). Tape methods are estimates; for clinical accuracy use DEXA or hydrostatic weighing.
